OPEN GOVERNMENT

NO BLACK BOX COMPUTER VOTING!

DEMAND A PAPER BALLOT!

The system put in place for this election (2006) is easily compromised, unsecured, and changes made by 12 year old hackers from China cannot be traced.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Access to government records is essential to a free press and an informed electorate. An open government is a more honest government. My opponent has sponsored legislation that would prohibit access to nearly all State of Utah government records. The current law, known as GRAMA, is adequate for privacy needs and the need for openness.

WHY WOULD HE DO THIS?

Apparently the claim is; that he wants to stop pedophiles and identity thefts, as well as commercial companies trying to mine personal data. I challenge this openly… and ask that he produce any legally admissible evidence of any sex offender or identity thief using state records to commit their crimes. If any one had done this it would have left a paper trail. Furthermore, it is not commercially viable to get names and addresses this way, because the state charges for document releases. My opponent is a mortgage banker, if he was honest and serious about protecting personal information shouldn't he have done something to LOCK DOWN peoples credit information? Perhaps he or preferably I, can propose an Identity Theft Registry or a registry of predatory consumer credit banks and bankers who abuse credit information.

The truth is that only a government who has something to hide wants to hide it.
Sex offenders would love 'Agaard's Law' because it would give them back their privacy.

Utah Sex Offender Registry

What has my opponent got to hide? Although I'm sure he is not a sex offender, he is tinkering with GRAMA. Perhaps his proposed law may have something to do with his campaign financing practices, or with trying to hide some of the STUPID LAWS he has proposed. To demand accountability from government we must have access to government, and its records. I commend the Daily Herald for its in-depth news stories on this CONSTITUTIONAL issue.
